Flaming Lips Discuss Super Bowl Commercial, Call It a 'Really Painless Experience'

Although Beyoncé is the big-name performer at this year’s Super Bowl, the Flaming Lips will be part of the action, too, thanks to the band’s appearance in a commercial for Hyundai.

The Oklahoma City rockers wrote a classic-sounding new song, ‘Sun Blows Up Today,’ for the spot, which includes footage of the band performing in unusual places, and their confetti-spewing tour bus.

“It was a really painless experience,” Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd tells Diffuser.fm.

Are the Flaming Lips ready for their closeup? Singer Wayne Coyne and his mates better be, as this Sunday will see the Lips star in their first-ever Super Bowl commercial, which will be beamed into the living rooms, rec halls and barrooms of a billion people around the globe. The spot, which features the catchy new tune 'Sun Blows Up Today,' captures in epic detail a 'Ferris Bueller'-like day in the life of an ordinary suburban family spent rocking out and hanging out alongside the Lips.

In news that has remained somewhat under the radar, until now, the singer showed up at the Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City last week with a grenade (or a replica of a grenade) on his person or in his luggage. It caused the airport to shut down and a horde of travelers to miss their flights. Needless to say, people were pissed!
