The rock world was saddened over the weekend to hear the news that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng had passed away. The musician died after spending four years in either a coma or semi-conscious state as the result of a devastating 2008 car accident. Ya know, I can actually recall the time MTV was born and all they played were music videos. There weren't any spring breaks, pregnant teens or drunk guidos. MTV served up 24 hours of music videos with music news splashed in from time to time.

But the success for the band is bittersweet as they've been doing it without the services of longtime bassist Chi Cheng, who has mostly been in a comatose state since his 2008 car accident.

2012 is just about in the bag, as long as that pesky Mayan calendar doesn’t end things prematurely. This has been another crazy year for mankind; hurricanes, global earthquakes, worldwide economic crisis, and Gangham Style! (That’s not meant to belittle those actual tragedies, but come on South Korea, really?!) Not everything was bad, though, as this year saw the culmination of every fanboy’s fantasy in the manifestation of the fantastic 'Avengers' movie. This year also saw the release of the third and final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s 'Batman' trilogy, 'The Dark Knight Rises'. Horror fans have been given a few TV shows they can finally get behind in AMC’s 'The Walking Dead' and 'American Horror Story: Asylum', and 'Halo 4' and 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2' will have gamers distracted well into 2013.

Having only been in a partially conscious state since Feb. 2012, Chi is now able to spend his life out of a hospital despite many return trips due to various infections. In a long post by Chi's mother, she shares the latest on Chi's recovery, including a close call concerning oxygen deprivation.
