Footage Surfaces From the Stone Roses’ Comeback Show

While the Afghan Whigs were kicking off their reunion tour in New York last night (May 23), a different group of ’90s rock legends commenced their own return to the stage. The Stone Roses, performing with their classic lineup for the first time in over 20 years, played what the NME called a “rapturously received comeback show” in Warrington, England.

Fan footage from the concert has already surfaced (embedded below), offering a glimpse of the reunited Roses delivering live renditions of ‘I Wanna Be Adored,’ ‘Made of Stone,’ and ‘Waterfall.’ According to the NME report, the band’s 11-song set also included ‘Sally Cinnamon,’ ‘She Bangs the Drums’ and ‘Love Spreads,’ but the band didn’t perform any of the new material they’ve been working on in the studio since announcing their reunion last year.

Last night’s gig served as a surprise warm-up for the band’s upcoming European tour, which is set to begin in earnest next month, and offered long overdue hope that the Stone Roses’ famously turbulent past might finally be behind them. Plagued by label strife and shifting lineups almost since their inception in the early ’80s, the band proved to be one of the most frustratingly enigmatic (and critically revered) bands of the ’90s, breaking out with a hugely popular self-titled debut album in 1989 but failing to follow it up for five years — and then breaking up in 1996 without releasing another LP.

According to recent reports, the band’s long studio silence should end in the not-too-distant future; one insider says they have “at least three or four songs recorded” for a new album.
