‘Star Wars’ 3D Releases Scrapped So Lucasfilm Can Focus On ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′
In one of the better ideas we’ve ever heard come out of Lucasfilm, the company has decided to nix the ‘Star Wars‘ 3D re-releases and turn their focus to the future of the franchise – namely ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ – instead.
Deadline reports that Lucasfilm is ditching that whole ‘Star Wars’ 3D thing because they need to work on making new movies instead. It’s kind of like when you get a job that you know was a really bad idea, and then you quit and tell everyone you’re “focusing on your long-term goals.”
‘Star Wars’ 3D wasn’t very enjoyable nor was it very successful from a financial perspective. The move seemed like another quick cash-in from Lucasfilm, but with the future of the franchise ignited by ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ and the company going to Disney, maybe those 3D re-releases aren’t that important. Disney also scrapped their plans to re-release ‘The Little Mermaid’ in 3D later this year following the poor box office of the recent ‘Monsters, Inc’ 3D release.
Lucasfilm did manage to re-release ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ in 3D last year, but it only brought in about $40 million. It seems wise for the company to scrap plans to re-release the remaining five films and instead work on getting JJ Abrams‘ and ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ in production.
