Tomorrow marks the 46th anniversary of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ and to help celebrate, Google has created an interactive new ‘Star Trek‘ Google Doodle.

‘Star Trek’ debuted on NBC on September 8th and, despite its ongoing popularity, only lasted three seasons. The ‘Star Trek’ Google Doodle celebrates the anniversary with an HTML5-designed interactive doodle that re-imagines the classic crew members as the letters G-O-O-G-L-E.

You’ll see G as Spock, O as Uhura, the other O as Kirk (wearing a bad toupee no less), the other G as Bones, the L as Sulu and the E as Scotty.

Says Google lead designer Ryan Germick on the ‘Star Trek’ doodle:

It’s actually more like a story — you can click around and discover things. Find some really unique, tiny nuggets from the show that meet the details of the program we all love. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. We had drawings and ideas for the past couple of years. We started putting it together in earnest three or four months back.

To start, you just need to click the pneumatic door in the back right to play along.

‘Star Trek’ fans have a lot to look forward to in the year ahead as ‘Star Trek 2‘ is set to hit theaters on May 17, 2013. Head over to Google now to watch/play the new ‘Star Trek’ anniversary doodle.
