Sony Patents Tablet Controller With Curious Name

Sony EyePad

A new Sony patent has been discovered for a tablet device tentatively called the EyePad (groan), indicating the company may be developing a new controller for the PlayStation 4.

According to SlashGear, the patent describes the EyePad (facepalm), as a, “panel, tablet, or slab-like device,” that could be used in conjunction with PlayStation Move for motion controls for gaming. In addition to providing virtual buttons on the device itself, Sony also described how users could control games without ever having to touch the device.

Two cameras on the tablet’s face would allow for motion tracking within the tablet’s boundaries, and using stereoscopic 3D algorithms, players could ostensibly control a game hands-free with the EyePad (ugh). Sony detailed potential gaming uses for titles like EyePet or a 3D roller coaster simulator, which players could manipulate with the virtual controls.

Now, just because Sony has patented such a device doesn’t mean they ever intend to make one. Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time Sony attempted to follow in the footsteps of Nintendo, whose Wii U uses a motion tablet. What Sony intends to do with the EyePad (sigh), remains to be seen, but at least we won’t have to wait long to find out if it will be part of the PlayStation 4′s future.
