Billy Corgan has a lot of trash to talk as he does the promotional rounds for Smashing Pumpkins‘ new ‘Oceania’ album — from his “piss on f—in’ Radiohead” comment to his total dissing of his former bandmates — and his latest target is a big one. Speaking to Fuse, the singer pretty much bashed all bands of the grunge generation, calling them out for not living up to the ideals they supposedly set back in the roaring ’90s.

In fact, he goes as far as accusing grunge acts of trading in the integrity they supposedly valued so much back in the day for the cash grab of mounting reunion tours and pursuing other interests steeped in nostalgia.

“My point of having a problem with nostalgia acts for the artists that are from the grunge generation is it basically subverts the original meaning of the grunge generation’s music, which is rebellion,” Corgan tells the music network. “So basically, everybody in their 40s are now all phoning in, let’s call it for what it is. And yeah, maybe [they will] put out one new song on the greatest hits album, but it’s not really getting back on the horse.”

He continues: “As far as I’m concerned, f— them, because they’re lazy or they’re scared. I grew up in a generation that had a message. Where is that message? If it’s going to be subverted by simple economic downturns, then the message wasn’t real at all.”

Corgan of course can’t go on a rant without attacking a specific band or two, and this time around he singles out indie heroes Pavement, who infamously called out the Pumpkins in their 1994 epic ‘Range Life’ with the verse: “Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins / Nature kids, but they don’t have no function / I don’t understand what they mean and I could really give a f—.”

Corgan’s blasts the band for the extremely lucrative reunion tour it embarked on in 2010. “No better case than Pavement, complaining about me in the ’90s, now doing the greatest hits tour,” he says. “Why? Ca-ching, cashing in. Maybe that’s why they were obsessed with integrity, because they didn’t have any.”
