When I was about 9 years old I remember by Great-Grandmother being in the hospital in a rotating bed. My brother and I thought it was great fun to be on one side of the bed and then run around to the other when she rotated. I'm sure it wasn't as much fun for her; it rotated to keep her from getting bed sores.

Bed sores are a problem for people who have had strokes, been paralyzed and especially the elderly because circulation problems. Sores develop when the skin is compressed cutting off circulation. The sores can then develop into infections which cause a whole other set of problems.

A Canadian company has come up with a new device called Smart-e-Pants. They are electrodes built into underwear that cause a twitching effect for 10 seconds every 10 minutes for 12 hours. During testing over a 1 month period these pants prevented sores in all of the patients. They even wanted to keep the pants once the trial was over.

This is great news for anyone who has ever had sores, or knows what it's like to care for someone who does. The previous mentioned study was small so a larger study will need to be carried out before they get approval to be widely distributed but it's definitely great news to see this coming to fruition.
