There’s really not a better place more fitting to have this year’s Carnival of Madness than in the heart of Brooklyn’s own carnivalesque environment that is Coney Island. Shinedown and Halestorm were the co-headliners for this year’s tour and New York fans were definitely overjoyed to see them perform at the Coney Island Amphitheater.

With an intro of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” playing beforehand to get the party started, Shinedown began their set with “Adrenaline,” the older anthem “Fly From the Inside” and “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom).” Frontman Brent Smith was sweat-soaked by the second song of the set, running so fast across the stage that he could put the Roadrunner to shame. Taking things down a bit, the melody of softer songs “Call Me,” and acoustic version of “Second Chance” and bassist Eric Bass’ rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” echoed throughout the corridors the venue. Fans sang out loud to Shinedown’s noteworthy Lynyrd Skynyrd cover “Simple Man” and they ended the night with “The Sound of Madness.”

No strangers to the Carnival of Madness tour, Halestorm took the stage prior to Shinedown for a set filled with limitless energy. Vocalist Lzzy Hale put her colossal voice to work, belting out hit after hit. In the middle of performing their newer track “I Like It Heavy” off of their latest album Into the Wild, drummer Arejay Hale used his Animal-esque energy to deliver a monstrous drum solo. Ms. Hale serenaded the fans with a restrained a capella intro to “I Get Off,” but later let loose during “Freak Like Me” and the set ending “I Miss the Misery.”

Black Stone Cherry ripped through their set as they are touring in support of their brand new album Kentucky. They performed the new track “Soul Machine” and got fans dancing with the older favorite “Blame It on the Boom Boom.” A highlight was their set ending rendition of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades.”

Texas rock act Whiskey Myers brought some more Southern soul to the mix and provided a lively set to open up the show. Check out our photo gallery above of all of the bands that performed in Brooklyn at this year’s Carnival of Madness Tour.
