Shay’s Summer Reading List for 2013

Summer Reading
Oli Scarff/Getty Images News

I love to read but I have to have the right book. I am currently reading “The Duck Commander Family” written by Willie and Korie Robertson. (I know, big surprise!)  I would like to read at least 5 books this summer so I’m already looking for great stuff that hopefully will intrigue me. As I did my research I was surprised to find so many ‘classics’ on the list as were many books that have recently been made into movies.

Some of the top books right now on the hot list include: Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling (not for kids), Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and Divergent by Veronica Roth. As you can see, 3 of these 5 have recently been made into movies and 2 of them are classics.

I’m not sure though that any of those really pique my interest so I dug a little further and found some others that will be hot this summer. Some have already been released, others will have a release date further into the year.

Rage Against the Dying

Another one I'm particularly interested in is "Rage Against the Dying" by Becky Masterman. This is a thriller that was released earlier this month. I'm told if you can get past the first chapter or so it is a book well worth reading. It's an FBI thriller about hunting sexual predators and the opening is apparently a little detailed and can potentially be off-putting, I'm told to keep reading or I will miss the best book of the summer. So I will give this one a try. I had a similar experience when I first sat down to read A Time to Kill by John Grisham; it was a year before I picked the book up and tried again. Once I got past the 'rape' scene in the first couple of chapters I loved the story.

Joyland

Stephen King also has another book coming out in June called Joyland. I've never understood how this man's mind works but he always comes up with some incredible stuff and I'm sure this will be no exception.

For you history buffs Chris Kyle wrote a book (other than his autobiography) with William Doyle called American Gun: A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms. It traces gun history from a flintlock rifle to the high tech weapons of today. This book will be released May 14th.

For a fun and easy read you can never count out the Evanovich family. Janet has had many best selling books on the market but now her niece Stephanie is showing her skills as a writer with her romantic comedy Big Girl Panties available July 9th.
