Shay Shares Her Experience of Running the ‘Run or Dye’ 5K
You heard me talking about the fact that I had entered the 'Run or Dye' event that was held this past weekend here in Abilene. Well, I'm happy to say I completed the event, my first ever, 5k in about 45 minutes. This was the most fun I've had getting dirty...ever!
I actually walked the 5k, but I did 'jog' across the finish line! I had my boyfriend, Martin and his son, Jace along with 2 of my best friends from high school, Traci and Tiffany, that did the event with me. We all had a blast getting dirty. About every mile and a half there were zones where people would throw powdered dye all over you. Then at the end of the race you stopped at the 'Dye Zone' and there was a party with music, giveaways and of course, more dye being thrown in celebration.
There were folks from all over the Big Country and of all ages that participated in Abilene's first ever 'Run or Dye' event. I met a group, while waiting for our wave of the race to start, that were from Snyder and Rotan and had brought their kids. The cutest little girls ever. Avery Gonzalez from Rotan and Whitney Lambaren from Snyder. I later found Whitney about halfway through the race and she said she was having a lot of fun. You will see them in the photos below.
The event was very well organized, and from my point of view, ran super smooth. I was highly impressed with the 'Run or Dye' organization and the crowd that participated. That crowd being almost 6,000 people. The run was also a benefit and this year's chosen recipient was Big Brothers Big Sisters of Abilene. They received almost $13, 500 from the event.
After speaking with Michelle from BBBS that money is enough to remove 18 kids from their waiting list. There are currently 239 kids on the list waiting for 'Bigs'. If you would like to become a 'Big' or you know a 'little' that needs a mentor you can contact the local BBBS organization at 547 Chestnut Street or call (325) 674-3113.

Here are a few photos that I took during the event.
