Shane Black’s Predator sequel was first announced a couple of years ago, though with Black completing The Nice Guys and working on a western pilot for Amazon, Fox had yet to make any promises about a release date — much less when Black and collaborator Fred Dekker would begin filming. But with the studio setting several new release dates over the weekend, it seems that the duo are finally gearing up to head into production on The Predator.

The first teaser poster and title for The Predator were recently revealed, hinting at some sort of forward momentum on the project. In addition to giving Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant a slightly earlier release date, BoxOffice.com reveals that Fox has set a March 2, 2018 release for Black’s Predator sequel.

Black will direct The Predator based on a screenplay he wrote with Dekker (Night of the Creeps, The Monster Squad), though no plot details have yet been made available. The project is said to be a sequel to the classic film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, in which Black had a supporting role and also provided uncredited work on the script. Last summer, Predator producer John Davis said that Black and Dekker’s script (or what he had read of it) offered a fresh perspective and called it “the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.”

Black’s next film is The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, which hits theaters this summer. No word yet on when he might head into production on The Predator, but sometime later this year or early next seems likely.
