We've got some great matchups in Round 1 of the Extreme Metal Olympics and Sepultura's Beneath the Remains taking on Kataklysm's Shadows and Dust is one of them! It's thrash against groove and only one will advance to the Quarterfinals.

Sepultura may not be classified as extreme metal by modern standards, but in 1989 the Brazilian thrash act’s Beneath the Remains was more than a fit for the title. Taking the aggression of German thrash acts and applying it to a subtle sense of groove and Max Cavalera’s social commentary, Sepultura released an all time classic. Songs like “Mass Hypnosis,” “Stronger Than Hate,” “Primitive Future” and the title track have all stood the test of time and still come with an aura of danger and excitement.

Kataklysm’s career is divided into two eras, the latter marked by Maurizio Iacono’s switch from bassist to frontman. Shapeshifting from unpredictable and spastic to a groove-centric approach, one of the Canadian northern hyperblast’s best is undoubtedly Shadows and Dust. The title track is a sonic steamroller, while more triumphant, though still dark, moments came on “Face the Face of War,” offering a dynamic experience.
