Rise of the Tomb Raider is a Timed-Exclusive, Likely Coming to PlayStation After
We have learned that Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Xbox exclusivity “has a duration,” according to the head of the company.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, confirmed that the very controversial exclusiveness of Rise of the Tomb Raider is not indefinite. Yesterday, we reported that Xbox announced the new Tomb Raider as an Xbox exclusive. The original way it was worded by Xbox Vice President Phil Harrison during the Gamescom press conference was rather vague. Spencer has also mentioned that the game is coming to both Xbox One and Xbox 360, confirming both next-gen and current-gen releases. He claimed that Square Enix is free to do what it wants with the game/franchise after their deal ends, which includes releasing it on rival consoles.
“When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it’s coming to other platforms, it’s not my job,” Spencer said. “My job is not to talk about games I don’t own. I have a certain relationship on this version of Tomb Raider, which we announced, and I feel really good about our long term relationship with Crystal and Square.
“I get the reaction I see. If I’m a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn’t buy the IP. I didn’t buy the studio. It’s not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we’ll see what happens with the game. I don’t own every iteration of Tomb Raider.”
Spencer explained that Tomb Raider will be launching this holiday season only for Xbox consoles, and that this exclusiveness has a duration. When asked about how long this exclusiveness lasts, Spencer did not wish to reveal how long.
Given Square Enix has a long history with Sony, we have a feeling we will see Rise of the Tomb Raider on PlayStation consoles sometime in 2015. This deal would have only been worth it to Microsoft if they were the only ones selling Tomb Raider 2 during the holiday season. The Internet might complain, but they forget that Square Enix had exclusive deals with Sony for the PS1 and PS2 that were much worse Xbox’s.
