It was 15 years ago today (April 5th, 2002), that the music world was saddened by the passing of Layne Staley of Alice in Chains. While some want to focus on cause of death, I'd rather focus on his music.

Staley had one of the most unique voices I've ever heard. By itself it may not be consider great...or even good, for that matter. But combined with the lyrics and music he wrote and performed, his voice was angelic and demonic at the same time.

There was an eery beauty in his voice. There was an even darker allure to many of the lyrics he wrote.

I remember hearing "Man in the Box", from Alice in Chains' debut album 'Facelift', for the first time and recall it scaring the crap out of me.

The music was amazing and had me hooked from the get-go but after I actually listened to the lyrics, it really kinda scared the 'Christian' side of me.

Whether they were beautiful or dark songs, everything Layne wrote and/or sung evoked some kind of intense emotion in those who listened.

We all have our influences and passions in music, but one of my favorite of all-time is Layne Staley. RIP.
