Violence broke out after Saturday night’s Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Newark, N.J., where at least five people were assaulted leaving the venue by what a police director called a group of teenage “thugs.”

NJ.com reports that video evidence suggests a group of 10 to 15 teens around 15 years old took victims’ phones during the attacks, but were likely motivated more by a desire to cause trouble. Police Director Samuel DeMaio said, “I think the taking of the cell phones was secondary. I think the main focus was to assault them. Some of the kids were laughing through the assaults.”

Three teenage boys were arrested Wednesday in connection with the attacks as they boarded a bus. They were charged with rioting, aggravated assault, conspiracy and robbery. The assaults had given one man a shattered eye socket and another was left unconscious in front of his son.

The Chili Peppers performed for a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at the Prudential Center. It was the band’s second show in two nights in Newark. The had dedicated Friday’s show to the late Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys by performing two of the band’s songs.
