Plans have been announced to set up a charity in honor of Scott Johnson,  the 33-year-old drum technician killed in the tragic June stage collapse before an outdoor Radiohead concert in Toronto, Ontario. Johnson’s parents have set up the Scott Johnson Bursary Fund for Young Musicians to provide instruments for aspiring musicians in the town of Rotherham, England, where Johnson grew up.

Radiohead drummer Philip Selway announced the charity in a post on the band’s Facebook page:

Over the past couple of months, a number of people have asked if there is anything they can do in memory of Scott. Scott’s parents have now created the Scott Johnson Bursary Fund for Young Musicians. This will fund musical equipment for you…ng people in Rotherham in the UK, where Scott grew up. If you would like to find out more, or would like to make a donation, then please follow this link:

Many thanks

Johnson, who lived in Doncaster, England, and was also a technician for Keane, was crushed to death when a section of the stage’s roof collapsed while he was setting up equipment before the band’s concert. Radiohead paid tribute to him in July during their first concert following the accident.

Scott Johnson’s parents also released a statement about the charity they are setting up for their late son. It reads:

It has been heart-warming to receive kind wishes. We have had many requests for donations in place of flowers and have set up an account that will be the Scott Johnson Bursary for Young Musicians. This will be managed by his friends locally as a fund primarily in Rotherham schools.

Frankly we cannot equate to the financial aspects but if it helps anyone to contribute in this way the account is established to ensure no other fund is created in error. It may take a while, but we will keep you informed on how the money is spent in due course.”

The Scott Johnson Bursary Fund for Young Musicians website mentioned above is currently accepting donations for the cause.
