Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme Discusses Elton John Collaboration
Queens of the Stone Age are now in promotional mode, beginning to build the buzz for their upcoming ‘…Like Clockwork’ album. Frontman Josh Homme recently visited the U.K.’s XFM where he discussed how the band’s collaboration with Elton John came about.
Homme explained that it was actually an old friend that helped him out. Speaking about how John came on board, the frontman revealed, “[Elton] was in a car listening to Them Crooked Vultures and his assistant said, ‘You need to hear Queens.’ The guy driving the car was an old roommate of mine! So all of a sudden, I get a phone call at my house on a Sunday. I picked it up and he said, ‘Hello Josh, this is Elton.’ I thought someone was messing with me.”
The Queens leader continued, “He said, ‘The only thing missing from your band is an actual queen!’ I said, ‘Honey, you have no idea.’ When he walked in, he said, ‘Do you have a ballad for me or what?’ I said, ‘No.’ We tracked live for three hours, playing a rock and roll song. We just had a blast. He became part of our band. What really dawned on me was what a music lover, what a workaholic he is.”
Homme recalls that the session up to that point had been kind of dark, but Elton’s presence really lightened the mood and left the band “on cloud nine.” “We got fired into the abyss of doing something we really loved again,” said the vocalist.
