Protest the Hero’s ‘Underbite’ Video Powered by Finger Puppets

Protest the Hero have taken plenty of creative risks over the years and the band continues to push their artistic boundaries when it comes to their videos. The group’s latest clip for ‘Underbite’ is a definite undertaking, serving as more of a short film starring a bunch of finger puppets.

In the clip, a group of friends brave the cold to see the hot fictional band ITH when they come to town. One of the concertgoers praises the band, shells out a lofty sum for a concert t-shirt and defends the group against lip-synching accusations before stumbling upon the lead singer backstage mocking the city and venue at which they are performing. This sends our main character into a rather humorous downward spiral (if you find finger puppets taking on real people humorous).

The video was directed by Mark Ricciardelli and features art direction from Steve Manale. Speaking about the clip, the band stated, “We admit, we have had some pretty outlandish ideas for music videos in the past. We may not have hit it out the park with all of those ideas – but something tells me we are close with this one. When we brought up the idea of a full-blown puppet video to our friend / director Marc, he laughed in our faces. He continued laughing for weeks until he remembered a friend of his knew how to make wonderful little paper puppets. That’s when he got serious. He took on the idea with every bit of his creative being and this is the result. You may not like the song, you may not agree with the lyrics, but if you don’t like the video, we don’t like you.”

In other Protest the Hero news, the band just scored the biggest chart debut of their career. The ‘Volition’ album debuted at No. 20 in the U.S. and scored the No. 7 slot on the charts in their native Canada. The group is currently promoting the album on their late 2013 tour with Architects, the Kindred and Affiance. See their tour dates below:
