Pizza Hut and Home Depot Deny Using Black Keys’ Music for Ads

In a development that shouldn’t surprise anyone, anywhere, Pizza Hut and Home Depot are fighting a lawsuit brought against them by the Black Keys that alleges the two chains stole the Keys’ music for a pair of ads.

As reported by the Associated Press, attorneys for Pizza Hut and Home Depot are denying the Keys’ claims, which stem from TV commercials containing music that the band argues sounds like its songs. According to the lawsuit, Pizza Hut’s commercial uses elements of the Keys hit ‘Lonely Boy,’ while Home Depot lifted ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ for its spot.

Both tracks were recorded for the band’s latest album, ‘El Camino,’ which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard charts after its release last December, eventually attaining gold certification — and sending ‘Lonely Boy’ and ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ to the top of the Alternative Songs chart along the way.

Pizza Hut and Home Depot’s denials, filed separately by each company’s attorneys in Los Angeles courts, come two months after the band’s lawsuit was filed in June. No trial dates have been announced.
