Overkill’s The Walking Dead Trailer: It’s a Zombie Payday

Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Interactive has announced a long-term collaboration with indie publisher, Starbreeze Studios, resulting in a AAA, first-person shooter being developed for his hit comic and television series, ‘The Walking Dead’.

The company known for publishing most of ‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman’s works has announced that Overkill Software, the studio known for Payday 1 and 2, will be developing a major title based on Officer Rick Grime’s undead apocalypse. Overkill Software is a Sweden-based studio and a subsidiary company of Starbreeze Studios. Starbreeze is known for putting out The Darkness in 2007.

Bo Andersson Klint, Starbreeze’s CEO, had the following to say about this collaboration:

For Starbreeze Studios this is a major strategic move, taking on an independent brand and treating it as our own. We have great experience from the Payday series that can be utilized in bringing The Walking Dead to first-person shooter gamers everywhere. The Walking Dead TV series is the #1 TV show in over 50 countries with millions of viewers all around the world, and The Walking Dead comic is one of the bestselling comics ever. Overkill’s The Walking Dead will be our biggest endeavor to date and marks a new era for our company. This is a long-term commitment, as with all our franchises. Teaming up with Robert Kirkman on creating this game and involving our community in the process will show the strength of independents working together.

To celebrate this partnership, the Glenn-tastic baseball bat, “Lucille,” will be released as a free DLC weapon for use in Payday 2.

We’re a little bit hesitant on this collaboration. The last time we played TWD in a first-person shooter, it was last year in the abysmal The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct title done by Terminal Reality. Mind you, this was the same studio that made the great ‘Ghostbusters’ video game a few years back, but they ended up making nothing short of a quick, soulless and licensed cash-grab. Payday 2 was alright, but we’re not sure if Overkill will be able to deliver a “AAA” first-person shooter experience as indie publisher Starbreeze claimed.

Nevertheless, Overkill has some time on its hands to get it right. Overkill’s The Walking Dead will launch in 2016 and will have free updates and paid downloadable content after its release. Unfortunately, there is no word as to what consoles it will be hitting.
