Ouya Console to See Annual Releases

Ouya

Ouya’s CEO Julie Uhrman said the company will follow the mobile model, and release a new Ouya console every year.

Speaking with Engadget, Uhrman revealed the strategy, adding that ever-changing hardware makes it possible for the yearly refresh. ” “Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy,” Uhrman said. “There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3.”

“”We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will,” Uhrman added. Fortunately, the Android-powered console will still be viable for its users going forward as Uhrman foresees each Ouya iteration being backwards compatible. The marketplace will work like Steam, where all games are tied to the user rather than the console, ensuring little risk for upgrading to a newer Ouya with better, faster processors.

Of course, future Ouya consoles depend on how well this first effort performs. It’ll be interesting to see how the public that didn’t back the device through Kickstarter responds to Ouya once it’s available at retail, and whether or not yearly updates will even be possible financially.
