The family of the world famous physicist Stephen Hawking has confirmed his passing earlier this evening. The British scientist Stephen Hawking passed away earlier today. The Nobel-prize winning Hawking was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and his book A Brief History Of Time sold 10 million copies and was humorously dubbed "the most popular book never read.". In a statement released by his children Lucy, Robert and Tim they confirmed their father's passing:

"We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever."

Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted out his response to the news of Hawking's passing:

"His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure. Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018."
