The involuntary manslaughter trial involving the doctor who treated Slipknot bassist Paul Gray in the days before his 2010 death is now under way at the Polk Country District Court in Iowa, and the big story to come out of yesterday’s courtroom proceedings was the revealing testimony by Gray’s widow Brenna.

According to the Des Moines Register, while on the witness stand Tuesday (April 22), Brenna revealed that Paul was mired in an extreme drug addiction in the months leading up to his death. She also claimed that none of Gray’s Slipknot bandmates came to the bassist’s aid in the days before he died.

The trial involves Daniel Baldi, a doctor who is facing involuntary manslaughter charges in the deaths of Paul Gray and eight others. Baldi is being accused of continuing to write out careless prescriptions for patients in the midst of severe drug addiction.

Brenna testified that Baldi continued to prescribe Xanax for Paul despite knowing that the musician was a drug addict. However, the doctor’s lawyer pointed out that Baldi had tapered down Paul’s Xanax prescription prior to his death. And that only one of the bottles of drugs found in the hotel room where Paul died was prescribed by Baldi, explaining that it was ultimately the painkillers fentanyl and morphine that the Slipknot bassist overdosed on.

“You understand, do you not, ma’am, that if Paul got the morphine and the fentanyl on the street somewhere, that it’s nobody’s fault except Mr. Gray or the person he got it from?” asked Baldi’s lawyer Guy Cook of Brenna, who tearily replied, “I don’t know where he got them. It’s a hypothetical question. It’s not fair.”

Brenna also testified that she tried reaching out to Paul’s Slipknot bandmates to no avail just days prior to the bassist’s death. “One was playing golf two minutes away from our house but couldn’t come,” she testified. “Nobody else cared, nobody was involved. They told me it was my problem.” Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor and percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan may be called to the stand as witnesses as the trial progresses.

During her testimony, Brenna also said she didn’t call authorities about Paul’s condition because she was afraid of them finding needles and other drug paraphernalia in her home and feared that child services would take away her unborn baby.

The news of the charges against Daniel Baldi first surfaced in September 2012. For more details and video of Brenna’s testimony visit the Des Moines Register website.
