The South Regional featured only two games when the NCAA Tournament began its barrage of games Thursday, but don’t you dare confuse quantity with quality because both were compelling matchups.

Thursday’s final game featured tournament darlings VCU demolishing Akron. Despite a sub-par scoring effort from potential player of the year Trey Burke, Michigan thumped South Dakota State and Nate Wolters earlier Thursday evening.

VCU used its relentless press to take a 25-point halftime lead before cruising to the win. VCU’s Juvonte Reddic added 21 points. The Rams will face fourth-seeded Michigan on Saturday. Demetrius Treadwell scored 15 points to lead Akron, which made just one of its 13 three-point attempts.

(4) Michigan 71, (13) South Dakota State 56

Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III each scored 21 points, and Michigan pulled away from South Dakota State in the second half to win, 71-56, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament’s South Regional on Thursday evening in Auburn Hills, Mich. The Wolverines advanced to the third round despite getting only six points from star guard Trey Burke. Brayden Carlson led the Jackrabbits with 20 points. SDSU stayed close, trailing 30-26 at the half, but they could not rally. The Wolverines advanced to play VCU on Saturday.
