NBA 2K13 Shoots and Scores With 4.5 Million Copies
Since its October release, NBA 2K13 has shipped over 4.5 million units, and its success has led to a huge boon for Take-Two, which reported a 76% increase in revenue for the quarter ending December 31st, 2012.
Since Michael Jordan appeared on the cover for NBA 2K11, the franchise has shipped over 15 million units. Power dunker Blake Griffin, prolific scorer Kevin Durant, and speedy point guard Derrick Rose graced the cover of NBA 2K13, and their collective star power helped the installment sell 49% more worldwide in its first week sales than NBA 2K11. Electronic Arts’ decision to cancel NBA Live 13 also left the playing field free and clear for Take-Two’s continued dominance in console driven basketball games. During a conference call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that NBA 2K13 is, “the most profitable release in the history of 2K Sports.”
The company, which owns 2K Games and Rockstar Games, scored another hit last year with Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Expect a solid 2013 with the upcoming titles BioShock Infinite and Grand Theft Auto 5.
