After the Monsters of Rock festival came to an end in 1996, England's Donnington Park was void of one massive rock and metal festival until Download was conceived, launching in 2003. The following year found Metallica closing out the fest and they couldn't have done it without assistance from Slipknot's Joey Jordison and Slayer's Dave Lombardo.

Suffering from an illness (Lars Ulrich would later attribute it to fatigue from touring the world and a "weird half hour" on an airplane), Metallica were down the only drummer they'd ever known with a headlining festival gig to play. The thrash legends kicked off the set with Lombardo behind the kit, but relied on Jordison to handle the bulk of the work. Ulrich's longtime drum technician, Flemming Larsen, briefly stepped in as well.

See the timestamps below to see which drummer played each song in the set.

"Slipknot and Metallica were on tour together - when we hit the Download Festival, I got offstage, I barely pulled my mask off and they said that James Hetfield needed to talk to me," Jordison recalled on the Talk Music podcast. "Even though we were on tour for a while, it was a bit of a shock. He said, 'Lars can't make it to the show. Can you fill in?' I just freaked out. I instantly said 'Yes.' Without Metallica, I wouldn't play the way that I do."
