Megadeth to Celebrate 20th Anniversary of ‘Countdown to Extinction’ With Reissue and Fall 2012 Tour

Capitol/EMI

It was one of their most successful releases, and now Megadeth are ready to step back in time to revisit their 1992 effort, ‘Countdown to Extinction.’ The group has scheduled on Nov. 6 street date for a 20th anniversary reissue of the album, and they’re planning on playing the disc in its entirety during a late fall 2012 run.

The new double-disc reissue pairs the original effort with a 1992 concert recorded at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. The latter portion has never been released in its entirety, adding to the value of the reissue package. The concert audio has been newly remixed for this release.

Frontman and founding member Dave Mustaine personally oversaw the reissue process for the anniversary edition. Included in the package is a booklet with a new liner notes essay by journalist Kory Grow and a 24″ X 36″ poster with four collectible postcards.

Megadeth created the album during a time of turmoil as the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King verdict, the Gulf War, and the pending presidential election were at the forefront of the headlines and Dave Mustaine and his band started putting the disc together. The album would later earn a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary release, Megadeth will kick off a tour on Nov. 9 in Providence, R.I., with support from Kyng. The trek will wrap up Dec. 7 in Pomona, Calif. See the full itinerary below:
