This week’s episode of ‘Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?’ stars guitar legend Marty Friedman. In this video, the six-string icon and Japanese TV star proves and disproves what’s written about him on Wikipedia.

Beyond getting Marty’s birthplace wrong, Wikipedia also mistook who exactly got Marty his audition for Megadeth. Though one page said guitarist Jeff Loomis and another said manager Ron Laffitte, both entries were incorrect. Turns out the credit goes to Bob Nalbandian, who is now known for his Inside Metal documentaries on the genre.

It’s also untrue that Friedman was rejected from Megadeth for having multicolored hair. Marty confirms he basically got the Megadeth gig the day of his audition, but also explains why he had multicolored hair. “I was really broke and borderline homeless,” Marty describes. “I didn’t have the type money of attend proper salons and stuff. I might have colored my hair at one time and it halfway grew out. It wasn’t like I was trying to do some kind of trendy half-half type of thing.”

In this episode, Marty confirms he doesn’t like being referred to as a “shredder,” as the term is too limiting. “The people who are saying [shredder] about me, I know they’re saying it with love,” Friedman explains. “When I think of that word, I think of a lot of things that I completely don’t like in the field of metal and the field of guitar playing. I guess the word ‘mindless’ comes to mind.”
