Let’s be honest: EA Sports could literally use an upturned broom with a bucket for a head as the cover athlete for this year’s iteration of Madden NFL and the game would still sell a million and a half copies in its first week. For some reason, though, EA wants an NFL superstar to grace the cover of Madden NFL 15, just like every other year. Ho Hum. Today, EA Sports announced the 16 candidates for the honor, and you can vote on them now.

Fans can head to ESPN.com and vote once a day on each of the eight player matchups, with the winners moving on to the second round. Each round of voting lasts a week, with winners announced each Thursday during NFL Live at 4PM ET on ESPN. The overall winner will be decided on June 6.

Here’s a look at the first-round matchups:

(1) Richard Sherman (CB, Seattle Seahawks)(1) Cam Newton (QB, Carolina Panthers)

Those who watched the 2014 NFL Draft saw Detroit Lions legend and last year's cover star, Barry Sanders, announce the start of voting at the podium last night.

With this year’s game focusing heavily on defense, using a defensive player as the cover star would be fitting. Only two defensive players are among the 16 contenders, and one of them plays for the Panthers, and therefore doesn’t count. Our guess is that Richard Sherman, outspoken corner from the Super Bowl Champion Seahawks, will end up the winner, but we'll probably vote for Nick Foles. The guy had two picks last year. Two. All year.
