It's been a long and dusty road on the way to see George Miller's 'Mad Max: Fury Road' realized, as the film endured a lengthy production. While we previously saw some less than official peeks, today brings a much more official first look at Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron's characters from the upcoming apocalyptic sequel.

Hardy and Theron are on the cover of this week's Entertainment Weekly, who has the story on 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' and you can see them both in the image below in crisp detail. Hardy fills the shoes of Mel Gibson as the iconic road warrior Max Rockatansky, while Theron plays a tough commander named Imperator Furiosa (now that's a name right there). Theron shaved her head for the role, and both look completely suited for the post-apocalyptic setting. If anything, this first look just makes us hungry to see more already.

The film comes from an idea by Miller, the original 'Mad Max' writer and director, who is back at the helm for this sequel/spinoff of sorts. He got the idea back in 2003, but the film didn't begin shooting until 2012. "I wanted to tell a linear story -- a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes," said Miller. "In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed.”

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' is set to hit theaters on May 15, 2015, and more looks will surely roll out soon.
