Loudwire Podcast #6 – Korn’s James ‘Munky’ Shaffer

Korn are just about to release their highly anticipated 12th studio album, The Serenity of Suffering. Munky told us all about the album’s process and how Korn made the decision to bring back a ton of classic elements. At the insistence of producer Nick Raskulinecz, Munky and Head began trading guitar licks like back in the old days. Korn also put a greater emphasis on bringing Fieldy’s bass up in the mix so we can hear the low-ender impose his groove onto listeners.
In this episode’s ‘Rocker vs. Writer’ segment, Munky discussed exactly what makes a band “metal” with podcast co-host Joe DiVita. Stemming from frontman Jonathan Davis’ claim that Korn has never been a metal band, Munky adds his own perception into the mix before naming another legendary band Munky doesn’t consider to be metal, though others would disagree.
Having come from the golden age of heavy music on MTV, we also spoke with Munky about the channel’s departure from rock and music as a whole. The guitarist offers his take and shares some inspiring words for bands who may not be getting the media attention they deserve.
