The original 'Leprechaun' may be relatively well known among genre fans, but it's not particularly good or well liked. So we're fairly open-minded about the upcoming remake/reboot, 'Leprechaun: Origins,' and bring almost no baggage to the new trailer. After all, we're sure someone is capable of taking one of the silliest (to a fault) horror franchises of all time and making it work as a dark and deadly film. Right? Right?!

Unfortunately, the 'Leprechaun: Origins' trailer is a big pile of nothing. The setup is literally Horror 101: a handful of young people journey to Ireland and (cue the official synopsis!) “quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be when [a] town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Soon, the friends will find that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.” It's the exact premise that 'The Cabin in the Woods' so delightful skewered a few years ago.

A bland premise like that can always be saved by the monster himself, but the trailer doesn't even give us a glimpse of the title creature (played by WWE performer Dylan Postl). Since the tone of this teaser is so straight-faced and serious, we imagine that he won't be wearing a funny outfit or speaking in a goofy Irish accent. But if that's the case, what's the point of even making a 'Leprechaun' movie? If your movie is called 'Leprechaun,' you need to be prepared to go full Leprechaun.

But who knows? Maybe director Zach Lipovsky will surprise us. We'll find out for sure when 'Leprechaun: Origins' arrives on August 26.
