It’s been more than 20 years since Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home. The issue is still debated about for many reasons, but in a rare interview touching on the subject, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic claims that Cobain wouldn’t have killed himself that day if he hadn’t been so affected by heroin.
The 20-year anniversary (April 5, 2014) of Kurt Cobain’s death brought a media firestorm to Seattle, where police began to release never-before-published photos of Cobain’s death scene. Although most were not graphic in nature, the world was fascinated by the new discoveries.
Also close to Cobain’s grim 20th anniversary was the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where Nirvana was chosen for induction on the band’s very first year of eligibility. Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear put on a hell of a show at the event, jamming with Joan Jett and other female singers for a medley of Nirvana classics. “We just resurrected Nirvana last week, and we had a real challenge, like how are we going to do this? Because it’s big shoes to fill,” Novoselic tells ReasonTV. “I wanted to do Joan Jett, because I love Joan Jett.” He added that it was Dave Grohl’s idea to then go with all women performers.”
Novoselic goes on to address Kurt Cobain’s suicide. “The drug abuse was a big part of it, he was under a lot of pressure,” the bassist describes. “He made a bad choice, he was probably pretty ripped when he decided to do what he did. If he’d had a clear mind, he probably wouldn’t have done it … He was high on heroin.”
Other topics covered during Krist’s interview include leaving the Democratic Party and owning guns. “I was a Democrat for about 4 or 5 years, acted Democrat,” says Novoselic. “I thought I could reform the party, maybe I wasn’t going about it right. Maybe somebody can, and somebody will. But I don’t see it, it’s just a top down structure, it’s a soft money conduit.”
As for guns, Novoselic explains his use for them. “I own guns, I think they are a good tool to have out in the country. I should be able to protect my home and my family. I have pistols, and semiautomatic rifles, a shotgun. I have chickens, you need a shotgun, you get a raccoon in there, they’ll wipe you out. If I didn’t have a shotgun, I wouldn’t get fresh eggs.”
