Korn, ‘Narcissistic Cannibal’ – Song Review
Throughout the ’90s, Korn were one of the most celebrated bands on the planet. The nu-metal pioneers pumped out hit after hit to their rabid fan base. A true testament to Korn’s auditory power was when ‘Freak on a Leash’ came in at No. 1 on MTV’s ‘Total Request Live,’ beating out N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys after the two boy bands had been the only artists to top the ‘TRL’ countdown for six months.
While Korn’s level of popularity may not be quite as big as it was in the ’90s, the band has continued to thrive despite a number of lineup changes. Now Korn are back with a new single off an experimental album that’s set to arrive later this year.
‘Narcissistic Cannibal’ is the second single released from the upcoming album, ‘The Path of Totality,’ which is set for a Dec. 6 release. Following in the footsteps of ‘Get Up!’ Korn teamed up with mad scientists Skrillex and Kill the Noise to create the metaphorical Frankenstein. ’Narcissistic Cannibal’ combines the strengths of all three creative forces to succeed where so many others have failed with similar experimental collaborations.
‘Narcissistic Cannibal’ harnesses Korn’s simple and catchy vocal hooks with a dub-step rhythm section that complements the atmosphere created by Korn without overpowering it. Korn frontman Jonathan Davis delivers a haunting vocal performance reminiscent of past Korn hits such as ‘Got the Life’ and ‘Falling Away From Me.’ The lyrics to ’Narcissistic Cannibal’ don’t delve into any new ground for the band, although they offer a few interesting lines such as ‘Pushing on I can’t escape, everything that comes my way / It’s haunting me, taking it’s sweet time.’
Overall, ’Narcissistic Cannibal’ is about the big picture. The trinity of Korn, Skrillex and Kill the Noise have created a track that captures the intimacy of ’90s Korn, mixing it with a fresh twist of futuristic atmosphere.
