Julie & The Wrong Guys, ‘Farther From You’ – Exclusive Video Premiere
Collaborative projects, at their core, should be something musicians do in order to constantly challenge themselves to write better music, in places they may not be familiar in. It's a good reason for Julie & The Wrong Guys to exist. The project consists of members from '90s grunge act Eric's Trip, and Canadian hardcore powerhouse Cancer Bats, resulting in a heavy, driving new act. They recently released their self-titled debut LP, and now they're exclusively premiering their music video for "Farther From You" here at Loudwire.
Under a thick VHS cassette-tape gauze, the band charges out a powerful song. Guitars intonate sounds akin to sludge and stoner rock, with each riff sounding like it weighs a thousand pounds. It's a good counter balance for singer Julie Doiron, who after years of performing off-kilter indie rock gives a warped and unexpected performance on the song. Her lyrics take the song out of being a straight forward sludge or stoner rock track, instead giving it stranger and poppier elements. Her singing style pays homage to noise and other eclectic genres of rock music, showing how vast a field have influenced her as a musician, and the band as a whole.
"This was the song that got us into the collaborative writing spirit, working together as a band instead of four musicians and songwriters," says the band's Mike Peters. "We wrote the album at a cottage next to a lake in October, so as we sat around the kitchen table working on the lyrics together the lake imagery served as the perfect metaphor for the ideas that Julie wanted to tackle in this song. Ideas of working to move into a new phase of life, and the uncertainty that comes with that.”
