Jack White Shares Space DJ Dreams With Astronaut Buzz Aldrin

Jack White has had some pretty good luck with attaching his music to balloons lately, so you can hardly blame him for wanting to take it to the next level. And by “the next level,” we mean “all the way to outer space.”

Thanks to the brilliant minds at Interview Magazine, White recently sat down for a chat with legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Naturally, the subject soon turned to space, and White took the opportunity to share his latest ambitious project: developing a special record player built for intergalactic rocking.

Telling Aldrin he wants to be responsible for the “first vinyl record played in outer space,” White described his plans “to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player. And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play.”

Aldrin, while assuredly fascinated by White’s plans, also listened while he discussed the demise of the White Stripes. “I didn’t want to go out and make solo records if the White Stripes still existed,” explained White. “I thought that people would be too confused by the two ideas and a lot of people wouldn’t be able to get their head around it. So, in a sense, it was something that was bound to happen one day. But I’m sad about it all the time.”

Hopefully White’s impending space voyage will help cheer him up. We’re hoping he decides to cut a deliciously lo-fi cover of Elton John‘s ‘Rocket Man’ to mark the occasion.
