Microsoft Possibly Adding 24-Hour Xbox One Trials To Xbox Live Gold

A mysterious listing that appeared on the Xbox One firmware update beta has gamers wondering if Microsoft is planning on implementing a 24-hour free trial system for downloadable games.

Last night, Reddit users spotted an entry on the new Xbox One interface that listed Max: The Curse of Brotherhood with a “Free Play Day With Gold” offering. This could indicate that Xbox Live Gold members will soon be able to play the game for 24 hours before deciding whether or not to purchase it.

Kotaku reports that Microsoft has stated that this specific posting was made in error, but the company did not discount the idea of a 24-hour trial system; “A promotional tile for ‘Max: Curse of the Brotherhood’ was posted briefly on the US dash in error yesterday. We apologize for any inconvenience. We’re constantly exploring different ways to offer more benefits to our Xbox Live Gold members and will keep them updated when special offers become available.”

If Microsoft is planning to implement this system, it will mark another step in their efforts to bring the Xbox One up to speed with the PS4. The Playstation Plus program has been a boon for gamers, offering tons of free games to its millions of members. Xbox Live’s Free With Gold system went a long way towards evening out the subscription services, but the PSN is still a better deal for gamers, due to its multiple free offerings across the PS3, PS4 and PS Vita.. Perhaps this erroneous listing is the first hint that Microsoft is doing everything it can to equal or exceed its rival.
