I have to admit I don't get to the Austin area very often but this is one place I will put on my list of travels. The Inner Space Cavern is located in Georgetown, just outside of Austin and it looks gorgeous! These caverns have been hidden for over 10,000 years and are some of the best preserved in Texas. They weren't discovered until 1963 and it was almost by mistake. The Texas Highway Department was drilling and taking samples of the area grounds to see if it would support a major highway. When they were drilling a bit dropped some 26ft and therefore the caverns were discovered.

A few months later over 7,000 ft. of the cave had been discovered and surveyed. It was then opened to the public 3 years later. The cave is about 72 degrees but stands at about 98% humidity, making feel closer to 80. This is slightly different from Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico which can be in the 50 degree range.

Tours are offered daily. The caverns have narrow pathways so if you want to plan a trip keep in mind that they cannot accommodate wheelchairs, strollers or tripods (for photos). It is open to all ages year round. It is also open to school groups, scouting groups etc. and to the general public. There is the general Inner Space tour which is a guided tour through the large open caverns. However, for those a little more adventurous there is the Hidden Passages Tour as well. This tour will require a flashlight and take you on newly discovered areas with rugged, undeveloped trails which is offered on a limited, first come first serve basis.

Tours run about an hour and you can even take a virtual tour here to give you an idea of the breath taking scenery of the caverns. Of course, there is nothing like seeing this in person. For more information on the Inner Space Caverns visit their website here.
