Abilene Farmer’s Market Has Straight from the Farm Fruits and Vegetables That A Lot of Us Grew Up On
Sure it’s easy to just go to the store and get those fresh veggies to throw on the grill, or some fruit to refresh you on a hot West Texas day. But, if you grew up on straight from the farm produce, then there is no comparison to getting them from the farmers who grow them at the Abilene Farmer’s Market.
When I was young, I remember my grandpa and grandma always grew their own fruits and veggies. They always planted everything from squash, tomatoes and jalapenos, to cantaloupe, watermelon and everything in between. I loved going out to the garden and picking off a tomato, and pretty much just eating it right off the vine. Our meals always had some sort of fresh picked vegetable, fruit, or both. To me, it was what a good home cooked meal was all about – meat, taters, and fresh fruit and veggies.
Unfortunately, my grandparents are no longer here. But, I can still get a taste of those fresh fruits and veggies that I grew up on at the Abilene Farmer’s Market.
You can check out the Abilene Farmer’s Market every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the corner of North 3rd and Mesquite. They are usually open right at sunrise. Check out their Facebook page, if you want to know more.
The earlier you get out there, there better stuff you’ll get. I guarantee there is nothing like the taste of the freshest fruits and veggies you can get. Plus, if you’re like me and grew up on them, you’ll always remember the taste of home.
Do you buy your fruits and veggies at the store, or do you look for a farmer’s market?
