Learning to appreciate good scotch is part of what makes you a man. Or a woman. An adult, let's say. Point is, whoever you are, when you have the good fortune to be holding two fingers of a 12-year-old single malt, please don't treat it like a frat boy with a bottle of Fireball.

The man in the above video is Highland Park's Gerry Tosh, who is here to give you a few pointers on what to do and not to do when tasting a good scotch. He'll let you know the differences between tasting wines and whiskies, how the color of the liquid affects the taste (it doesn't), and how you can spot someone who doesn't know what he's talking about. As he says, "Please don't get led down a garden path by someone who says, 'I can smell winterberries picked on a Wednesday by left-handed people.' "

That's good advice. And it sounds so nice when said in that marvelous accent, too. Just practice Gerry's wisdom, and pretty soon you and Ron Swanson'll be best buds.
