Well, were do we start here?  First Cinco De Mayo is NOT "Mexican Independence Day". It's a celebration of the the "Battle Of Puebla" in which Mexican forces whipped the French in 1862.  It was basically 2000 under-equipped Mexicans versus 6000 Frenchmen and they whooped 'em good. This was good for the U.S. too, because some thought if the French won, they'd use Mexico as a launching point to get involved in the civil war.

Anyways, I can see how this celebration is a big deal. Not only did this small army save their country, it's a classic underdog story. This is like Rocky beating three Apollo Creed's all at once.

Now every once in a while there's a racist asshole who will say "if you're so proud to be Mexican, then go back to Mexico".  This is the same guy that will talk about how his ancestors were civil war heroes or came over from Ireland or who will claim to be one-quarter of some type of Native American or another.  In other words, for some people it's okay for them to be proud of their heritage, but it's not okay for other people. I'm the opposite. If you have Mexican ancestry, then you come from a lineage of ass-kickers and you should be proud of that.  It's okay to celebrate and who cares if people don't understand that celebrating your heritage does not mean you are demeaning the place where you currently live at all. No one tells the folks in Muenster Texas to "go back to Germany" when they celebrate Germanfest.  Celebrate all you want on this Cinco De Mayo and be proud of your heritage.  You can be a proud American and a proud Texan and still be proud of your ancestry.
