Hanging With Ninjas: A Press Day in the Life of Twelve Foot Ninja

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

Right after their Golden Gods win for Best New Talent and right before they kicked off their headlining tour in promotion of their latest album ‘Silent Machine,’ two fifths of Twelve Foot Ninja made a stop in New York City. We got the opportunity to hang out with vocalist Nik ‘Kin’ Etik and guitarist Steve ‘Stevic’ McKay on their very unique press day.

We first began our journey at the café Spoon & Tbsp in Manhattan, then rode with the Australian rockers on the PATH train over to New Jersey. With their (very heavy) Golden God in hand we headed over to what some would call heaven on earth, also known as the microbrewery and arcade that is … Barcade. Kin and Stevic got a couple of beers and relived their childhood (aside from the alcohol) by indulging in some old-school video games.

They weren’t only there for beer and games, as the good folks at Metal Injection set up shop at Barcade for a very entertaining video interview with the guys. Before leaving Jersey City we hit up the local hot dog vendor and grabbed a couple of franks for the road.

We headed on the A train, Brooklyn bound to the Creative Arts studio so the Ninjas could get a lesson in the Afro-Brazilian art form Capoeira, which combines martial arts, music, dance and acrobatics. The group Omulu Capoeira and their instructors Monitor Anun (Carl Garrick-Scott) and Monitora Mudanca (Manouela Koudounis) were there to show Kin and Stevic some moves and also make sure they didn’t hurt themselves or each other.

All of this was part of a video segment for Fuse TV. Halfway through the segment, a group of the studio’s smallest members (a bunch of five-year-olds who happen to have an interest in theater) came in and were completely captivated by the martial arts festivities and watched from afar. The Fuse interview ended with the Twelve Foot Ninja members picking up some traditional instruments and pretty much jamming with the instructors.

As Kin and Stevic rode the F train back into the city, they made some new fans along the way. Both new and old fans in New York can see them at their upcoming show at Webster Hall on May 12. For a full list of dates where you can catch them on their headlining tour, go here, and be sure to pick up the band’s latest album, ‘Silent Machine,’ at iTunes.
