Two groups plan to stage a fake active shooter simulation with cardboard guns and fake blood presumably to try to make their point about campus carry this Saturday.

First off, let the people who pay to be on the campus decide what kind of campus they want. They're the ones paying to be there. This event was originally supposed to take place on the UT campus until officials told the groups they would be trespassing.

Next up, how crazy are you that you want to engage in some sick fantasy of a mass shooting? Even worse, you're doing it in the shadow of the UT tower where Charles Whitman shot 32 people, killing 16. Putting aside that tragedy, there's the recent shooting in San Bernardino that claimed 14 lives and the Paris terror attack that killed more than 100 people.

It's also worth pointing out that no amount of people on the ground with guns could stop him. It took brave, trained officers storming the tower to stop the massacre. That speaks to the subtext of this event: that armed citizens should take the law into their own hands instead of waiting on police.

If gun owners want to be taken seriously and have their rights respected, they need to stay away from nonsense like this mock shooting publicity stunt. If you continue to shove your rights in everyone's face, it's only a manner of time before they get taken away.

And the groups staging this little sick fantasy need to stage their practice in private for people who care and not bother the students who are trying to take finals.

The group also plans an armed march through Austin before the demonstration.
