Green Day Unleash New Song ‘Kill the DJ’
Green Day struck gold with ‘Oh, Love,’ the lead single off their ‘¡Uno!’ album, but how would they do with their follow-up? The band just let go of their song ‘Kill the DJ,’ which is a more upbeat track with a somewhat sinister feel.
If you didn’t guess it by the title, singer Billie Joe Armstrong clearly has it out for the man behind the decks, rattling off such suggestions as “Hold him under water until he suffocates and drowns” and within the repetitive chorus begging, “Someone kill the DJ, someone shoot the DJ,” before finally finishing with the request “Keep the DJ down.”
Armstrong recently told Rolling Stone, “Mike [Dirnt] asked me to write a song with a four-on-the-floor rhythm. I’d never done it before. It’s kind of like ‘Sandinista!,’ Ian Dury’s ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,’ and the Tom Tom Club song ‘Genius of Love.’ We were trying to figure out how to make dance music without turning into a dance band.”
The song definitely will get kids on the dance floor, but it’s still features that Green Day vibe. It’s got the instantly infectious lyrics, some solid guitar and bass work from Armstrong and Dirnt, and a beat that won’t stop from drummer Tre Cool.
Keep an ear out for ‘Kill the DJ’ among the tracks on Green Day’s ‘¡Uno!‘ release Sept. 25.
