Green Day Ditch Politics for Heartfelt, Classic Rock-Inspired Songs

Green Day
Mary Ouellette,

Green Day have mapped out a pretty significant chunk of music over the next six or so months, with a trio of albums dubbed ‘Uno,’ ‘Dos,’ and ‘Tre’ coming in succession and redefining the band’s sound. The group have reportedly had enough of the politically-based rock that dominated the last decade and have a different direction in mind.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong states in the latest edition of Rolling Stone, “The big-Marshall-amp thing is over – I’ve done it for 20 years. We wanted to get into early AC/DC and Cheap Trick.”

Armstrong adds that he’s back to “writing about girls again,” and stated that the tracks on the ‘Uno’ album remind him of “feeling like your heart is on fire.” He adds, “On the second record, you start losing control,” and by ‘Tre’ “your heart will feel like a flamethrower. It gets really hot.”

The group is already off to a hot start with ‘Oh, Love,’ a track that recently became the third-ever song to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Rock Songs Chart. The video for the classic sounding track just debuted earlier this week.

Plus, they just served up ‘Kill the DJ,’ a song Armstrong says is rooted in the Clash‘s ‘Sandinista,’ Ian Dury’s ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,’ and the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love.’

The ‘Uno’ album drops in stores Sept. 25.

In other Green Day news, it appears via a new splash page that goes with their website that the band have teamed up with the creators of ‘Angry Birds’ to come up with a new game. They’re asking fans to share the hashtag #greendaypigs, and announced that the game is “coming soon.”
