American Idiot is the gift that keeps on giving for Green Day. The disc won the Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2005, has been certified six times platinum, inspired a theatrical production spinoff that made its way to Broadway and to London, and now is in line for a movie adaptation.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong revealed to NME that progress is being made on the American Idiot film, with Armstrong set to reprise his Broadway role of St. Jimmy in the film. "That's the plan right now," says Armstrong. "We've got the green light from HBO, and the script is going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I'm not sure when exactly we're going to start shooting, but it's definitely all systems go at the moment."

It's been a long journey to the American Idiot film, with Armstrong suggesting in interviews at the time of the album's release that the concept album would be a possibility for the big screen. But instead of a film, the theatrical production came first and became a huge success, which then reinvigorated interest in a film. In 2011, the film project was finally confirmed.

Since appearing as St. Jimmy in the Broadway production, Armstrong has been adding to his acting resume and he stars in the new film Ordinary World that is set to be released on Oct. 14. But while acting and the film are definitely among Armstrong's interest, Green Day will be taking first position on his "to-do" list for the immediate future.

The band's new album, Revolution Radio, arrives tomorrow, and the band is currently in the midst of a U.S. tour that will keep them on tour stateside through the end of the month. After that, there's a break in the touring schedule until January, when they begin a European trek. Dates can be found here.
