The folks at Digital Foundry have posted a YouTube video that compares the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto V to the upcoming PlayStation 4. Based on the video, GTA V will be a whole different visual experience on next-gen consoles.
The video does a good job of showing the upgrades to every aspect of the game, employing footage from both and side-by-side comparison shots. First off, we see that the game’s ocean will be far more impressive than before, with lapping waves and realistic foam. A shot of a mountainside shows off greatly improved trees and brush, as well as smoothly animated wildlife. Moving towards the city, we’re shown a variety of hi-def buildings and landscapes with crisp textures and bright colors that make the original look positively outdated. Co-protagonist Trevor Philips is seen awakening from a drunken stupor, and the new version of our favorite sociopath is stunning, with far more convincing textures and facial modelling. When we get to the city itself, instead of sparsely populated highways, we’re treated to a seemingly endless line of dense traffic, making the city seem even more alive. The video continues, showing many familiar Los Santos landmarks rendered in HD glory.
Grand Theft Auto V is already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history, with over 32 million copies sold since last year. The robust and infinitely entertaining Grand Theft Auto Online mode has been well-supported by Rockstar, and has become one of the most heavily populated online console games out there, keeping players interested in the property. When GTA V is released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it won’t just bring in a whole new group of players who will experience it for the first time, it will also bring back those looking to upgrade their multi-player experience and play through the game’s excellent campaign again in HD.
