‘Godzilla’ Empire Cover Features Our Best Look Yet at the Rebooted Movie Monster
Gareth Edwards‘ ‘Godzilla‘ will begin its theatrical romp on May 16, and although we’ve already seen preview footage and images from the film remake, they’ve only shown off the beast’s … well … backside. This all changes as Empire magazine debuts its latest subscribers cover, featuring a black-and-white(-and-red) image of the most famous monster mid-roar.
A lot has been said of this new ‘Godzilla,’ and as the Empire cover alludes, it’ll provide a nod to the original Toho films while cementing its own two feet in the world of modern monster movies. The film’s stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen previously praised Edwards for creating a large feature film with the feel of a smaller character-driven story, but for the director, one of the challenges was actually creating the monster itself.
“Trying to get the face right was the main thing,” he told Empire. “I guess he’s got more of a bear’s face, or a dog’s. We also used eagle. There’s a lot of nobility in an eagle. It made him feel very majestic and noble.” He even teamed with Andy Serkis (who portrays Gollum and Caesar in ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ and new ‘Planet of the Apes‘ movies) and his The Imaginarium motion-capture facility for certain scenes.
We’ll keep you updated on the latest previews of ‘Godzilla’ in the coming weeks, but for now, take a full-frontal look at the rebooted monster in the image below.
