Even as we’re staring down the barrel of our final Game of Thrones episodes, one can’t help wondering about the spinoffs. We know any and all ideas are set in the series’ distant past, but one writer confirms that readers of George R.R. Martin will recognize some Westeros history.

Keep in mind that HBO will likely choose only one of the five (if not more) pitches for a Game of Thrones spinoff, all of which have been said to explore earlier parts of Westeros history that don’t involve any familiar characters. All the same, IGN spoke to spinoff writer Jane Goldman – one of several working directly with George R.R. Martin – to learn her pitch likely involves a historical event from Martin’s appendices:

Yeah, I think I can say if I was able to say what mine was — yeah, I think as a book reader or as someone who watched the series, you would say, ‘Oh, that! OK.’ Yeah, it would be recognizable as a past event, but I think that’s probably as far as I can go.

Last we heard, the network hadn’t intended to begin work on any spinoff before the main series comes to a close (which might be 2019), though Goldman clarified “HBO is very keen to develop something to go on the air sooner rather than later after the series ends.” At the very least, Martin himself has clarified that no pitch involves the “Robert’s Rebellion” that set the stage for Game of Thrones a few decades earlier, nor will any include the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

There are dozens of possibilities from the few thousand years outlined by Martin, but where should we hope Goldman visits in the Game of Thrones universe?
